Is it time for an Automatic Litter Box?
One of the neatest inventions that cat lovers have praised is the automatic litter box. It works for you to scoop the litter box even when you are not home.
Be warned, however, automatic litter boxes are definitely not cheap.
If you are searching for the best automatic box for your kitty and for you then ask yourself a few questions to see if it would be a good fit:
Are you the type of person who loves to shop for sales, especially when it comes to litter?
Is kitty particular about switching litters?
Are you okay with buying refill cartridges every month or other month?
Remember that owning an automatic litter box does not free you completely from cleaning the litter box; it only lightens your chores.
If you like trying out new litter brands and are always buying something different or whatever is on sale, realize that with the automatic boxes you are limited to certain types of litter.
Remember, that the box will only work if you use the manufacturer recommended litter.
So, if you are okay with sticking with a certain brand of litter and paying the price for it then you are fine here.
Got a picky cat? If she does not like “new things,” such as having her litter switched and perhaps having a brand new foreign, noisy box, then think about what her reaction might be to it.
If the electric box requires the use of crystals or hard pellets, realize that your cat may not like walking over something new (at first) if she is picky about her litter.
Do not lose hope on buying that automatic box, however, since manufacturers will always suggest helpful ways to get your cat accustomed to the new box.
One issue that some automatic box owners forget is the cleaning and maintenance issue. Just because the box is an automatic does not free you from cleaning it completely.
The box will definitely need to be cleaned regularly and cartridges or compartments that hold the poop will need to be either refilled or emptied out (depending on which box you choose).
For certain boxes refill cartridges is an extra cost in addition to the litter. Refill cartridges are also an added expense to your monthly trip to the store!
If you have considered the extra costs of owning a box including litter, refill cartridges as well as some routine maintenance and are fine with it then go ahead and make that investment. It may be the best purchase you ever made!
